Hinckley United signed the 92 year old ex England terrace sweeper Owen Powers
towards the end of the 2005-2006 to relieve the pressure on Hinckley's strike
force. Having never played proffessional football, in the course of his job as a
cleaner on the terraces at Wembley Stadium, Owen did once watch the 'little fat
chap' Ferenc Puskas when he captained Hungary to be the first team to beat
England at Wembley. Obviously this makes Owen more than capable of leading the
Hinckley forward line, and to quote the unsteady pensioner after a couple of
'mild & brown': "I can do that sonny, back in my day we used to...etc etc"
Dean Thomas revealed he signed Owen mainly due to increasing fan pressure after
many calls were heard from the terraces: "Where is the Owen Powers?" |
